Religious School

Our spirited educational environment enables students to embrace their Jewish identity starting in the primary grades and continuing through the Bar/Bat Mitzvah year.

The goal of the Rabbi Zev and Florence Nelson Religious School is to empower students to participate in “Jewish journeying” by actively engaging with the many facets of our tradition. As affirmed in the classic biblical passage: “Thou shalt teach them diligently unto your children.”

Our dedicated teaching staff has a passionate commitment to Judaism – transforming our students into active learners, connecting them to their heritage, and reinforcing the values and importance of Jewish identity. All activities of Temple Emeth’s religious school are directed toward helping students find their own source of significance and enrichment in Jewish living.

In each grade our students:

  • Experience the ever-widening circles of Jewish life – in their homes, the synagogue, the Boston community, Israel, and the larger Jewish world
  • Learn Jewish history and literature, including the Bible and Hebrew language, which contributes to their inner strength as Jews
  • Frame their personal beliefs and actions in a Jewish context
  • Become valued members of the congregation by joining with adults for Shabbat services, holiday observances, and other significant Jewish occasions, and by understanding how to practice Jewish values such as Ma’asim Tovim (good deeds) and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world)

In addition to academics, our curriculum includes many culturally rich experiences that give shape and meaning to a Jewish education. These include music, dance, drama, special reading programs, field trips to museums, concerts, plays, meetings with important personalities in the Boston Jewish community, special assembly programs for holidays, and Tzedakah projects.

A Graduation Prayer

This prayer was written by the seventh graders and recited by them at graduation ceremonies held in June.

Adonai, we thank you for letting us live to experience this moment. We are grateful for moments shared with one another, being there for each other, and witnessing each other’s Jewish journeys.

We have completed these years of Hebrew School, developing our Jewish identities. We are thankful for the opportunities to have learned about our ancestry, history, and traditions. We appreciate this place of learning which has brought us closer to ourselves as we have matured and grown in our understanding of Judaism.

As we take the next step in Jewish learning, strengthen in us the desire to continue our development and knowledge beyond Hebrew School. Teach us to take responsibility for our choices to grow as individuals and Jewish people. Teach us the ways to do what is right in our own time.

May we forever be included in the Jewish community.

Amen.
