Music

Music is integral to life at Temple Emeth. Sweet and harmonious sound enriches our services and programs, including familiar melodies sung together on Shabbat, the chanting of blessings and prayers, soloist selections at the High Holy Days, traditional cantorial and organ-based music, musical tributes, and concerts.

Here are some ways to get involved in the music that enhances Temple Emeth throughout the year.

Shirei Emet Choir

Shirei Emet (“Singers of Truth”) is a multi-generational group of talented vocalists in our congregation. Started in 1989 by our music director, Gennady Konnikov, the continued success of Shirei Emet is due to his passionate leadership, and to an equally enthusiastic group of singers who enjoy one another’s company, as well as the harmonious blending of their voices.

The choir’s repertoire includes a diverse selection of Jewish choral music, ranging from classical Jewish composers to contemporary works of local cantors. Shirei Emet performs at Temple Emeth holiday celebrations and concerts, the Spring Musicale, and B’nai Mitzvot. Beyond the congregation, our choir has performed at nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, the Vilna Shul (Boston), Touro Synagogue (Newport, RI), and the annual North American Jewish Choral Festival (Catskills, NY).

Rehearsals are held at the Temple. New members are welcome. For information please contact the Temple office at 617-469-9400, or email Gennady at musicdir@templeemeth.org.

Norma & Friends

This exuberant group of uninhibited vocalists is directed by Norma Levine – pianist, arranger/composer, and witty lyricist extraordinaire. Norma & Friends performs original musical tributes for Temple Emeth functions and events. Norma adroitly pens lyrics, both humorous and heartfelt, utilizing musical sources which include Broadway, classical, film, opera, oldies, bebop, Brazilian, Israeli, and Yiddish, and her original tunes. Each tribute reflects the honoree’s personality, history, and musical taste, and each member of the “Friends” adds personal touches that make the tributes full of warmth and laugh-out-loud moments.

If you can carry a tune and feel at home on stage, consider auditioning for Norma & Friends. Contact Norma by phone - leave a message at the Temple office 617-469-9400 - or email her at norma@templeemeth.org.
