Gifts and Giving

Gifts to Temple Emeth supplement traditional membership dues and fees, and help us to provide:

  • Inspiring worship services led by outstanding clergy
  • Stimulating educational opportunities for children and adults
  • Jewish cultural programming
  • Connections and caring for our congregational community
  • Fulfillment of our commitment to Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and K'Lal Yisrael (the Jewish community worldwide)
  • Membership to all who wish to join regardless of ability to pay full dues and fees
  • Maintenance of our building

Temple Emeth itself is a giver, combining Tzedakah with community-wide holiday celebrations such as Simchat Torah, Chanukah, and Purim. Our goal at every community event is not only to celebrate, but to help others through a Mitzvah project. One example is our youth group collecting money for Yad Chessed, an organization that provides short-term assistance to local Jewish families in need.

We strive to make it easy for members and nonmembers to donate in a way that is meaningful for each individual. Large gifts are greatly appreciated, as are smaller amounts, which add up and are equally valued. Gifts can be targeted or unrestricted. Every gift to Temple Emeth makes a difference and is tax deductible! We are grateful for your support and generosity.

Annual Appeal/Premier Member Program

Annual Appeal participants and Premier Membership purchasers play a special and vital role at Temple Emeth through their leadership and generous support of our many programs and activities, and their help in keeping Temple Emeth affordable for all who want to belong to our community regardless of their financial circumstances.

Temple Emeth Funds

The Temple maintains a wide range of both unrestricted and special-purpose funds to support:

  • Building and grounds
  • Cultural enrichment
  • Educational programming
  • General or specific purposes
  • Religious observance and community needs
  • Scholarships
  • Social action initiatives
  • Youth activities and programs

Many of the funds were initiated by gifts from various members/families within our synagogue community; others were established from the Temple’s operating and capital resources. Your contributions to these funds will help sustain the underlying purposes; and your interest in establishing a new fund ($5,000 minimum donation), or identifying an unmet need, is equally appreciated.

Temple Emeth Funds are an ideal choice when celebrating a simcha, honoring a special occasion, sending a recovery wish, memorializing a Yahrzeit or recent condolence. There are no minimums or limits, and any gift, regardless of size, is important and greatly appreciated. Acknowledgment of the gift is sent to the beneficiary(ies). You can remain anonymous, if desired, and the amount is kept confidential.

Our Online Giving Form shows individual funds, categorized as above. While we have done our best to include all active funds, please contact us if we have missed one.

Book of Remembrance

A gift to the Book of Remembrance is a special way to honor the memory of a loved one. The Book of Remembrance is printed each year for distribution on Yom Kippur. For more information please contact our Executive Director by phone at 617-469-9400 or email.

Memorial Plaques

Memorial Plaques may be dedicated in memory of loved ones and are displayed in the Sanctuary and in the Chapel. Memorial Plaques contain individual lights and are inscribed with the name of the deceased and the date of death. Memorial lights are kindled on the day of an individual’s Yahrzeit. All Memorial Plaques are lighted on Yizkor.

Memorial Plaques are dedicated at our annual Selichot Service. In addition, names of the deceased are read during Saturday evening services the week of Yahrzeit. Family members receive notification of a Yahrtzeit so they have an opportunity to recite kaddish.

Simcha Leaves

Celebrate engagements, weddings, births, B’nai Mitzvah, birthdays and anniversaries by purchasing a lasting tribute! Simcah leaves are a beautiful way to remember happy occasions. Engraved brass leaves are placed on our Simcha Leaf board located in the hallway leading to the Sanctuary. The cost per brass leaf is $400.

Bimah Flowers

Beautify the sanctuary on Shabbat and holidays and benefit Sisterhood by sponsoring a delightful arrangement of fresh flowers for the Bimah. Leave a message for Beverly Albert at the Temple office 617-469-9400, or email her at

Kiddush Sponsorship

Sponsoring a Kiddush is a wonderful opportunity to honor a loved one for any special occasion, be it celebrating a birth, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, graduation, wedding, anniversary, birthday - or just saying thank you. Basic or enhanced Kiddush menu options are available.

Family Table

Temple Emeth is a participant in Family Table, a kosher food pantry under the auspices of Jewish Family & Children’s Services, which provides nutritious food on a monthly and emergency basis to individuals and families in need. Cans of kosher tuna are collected at the Temple and transported to the pantry. Temple members volunteer at the Food Pantry to sort, pack, and deliver groceries to recipients. Families, including young children, can volunteer for a few hours once a year and feel they can make a difference as they experience hands-on Tzedakah.

Merchant Support

Several merchants return Temple Emeth a portion of the amount of goods purchased by our congregants. The amounts differ by each merchant, as do their procedures for administering the support.

Bring your receipts from The Butcherie kosher grocer, located on Harvard Street in Brookline, to the Temple Office. The Temple receives a return on all cash and credit card purchases.
