Ma'or – Religious School for Grades K-5

For more than seven decades, Temple Emeth has been providing a spirited and engaging educational environment for the children of its members. Beginning in the fall of 2013, Temple Emeth embarked on a new and exciting adventure into twenty-first century Jewish education when it collaborated with Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Chestnut Hill and Temple Reyim in Newton to form Ma’or, an integrated, student-centered educational program for children in grades K-5.

Ma’or (Hebrew for "illumination") is a fusion of the Hebrew names of the three synagogues and represents a collaborative adventure that is unprecedented in the Boston area. Ma’or reflects the cutting edge of Jewish educational philosophy and trends for the future.

The vision for Ma’or includes student-centered education – making the material relevant and connected to the students’ lives and giving students opportunities to delve into areas of study of interest to them. Instead of a proscribed curriculum, a variety of courses are offered each year from which students can choose. Realizing that children learn in different ways, Ma’or is accessible to students with a variety of learning styles and uses the latest technology as a tool to present materials in ways that actively engage all learners.

Curriculum and Learning Objectives

The curriculum is organized around five Pillars of Study – Torches of Illumination:

Am Yisrael: The People of Israel
Torah: Tanach and other Jewish texts
Tikkun Olam: Community service and social action
God and Spirituality: Prayer and holiday rituals
Jewish Languages: Focus on Hebrew but inclusion of other languages

Ma’or extends beyond the traditional classroom to connect learning and living, and studying and doing, resulting in the creation of a community of lifelong learners and active members who are excited, fulfilled, and purposeful in their Jewish journeys. Ma’or taps into a wide range of community resources, integrating the Jewish educational setting/school, family education, connections with each synagogue, and a relationship with the greater Jewish community to provide a relevant and meaningful experience for its students.
