American Gods: Idolatry in the Post-Modern Age

Join Cantor Michael McCloskey as we explore idolatry in the age of augmented reality.  What are the motivations behind this “strange worship”? In addition to the modern thought of Derrida, Ouakin, and Moshe Halberthal, we will consult Jewish texts regarding the golden calf, Molech and the asherah through the lenses of our classic commentators, Talmud, midrash (early rabbinic through modern), and philosophical and mystical texts.

Furthermore, we'll seek to divulge the yearnings our ancestors may have felt which led to this "strange worship" and the yearnings we moderns feel that lead us to worship and fetishize the screen, the celebrity, and short-term gratification among other things. What paths and wisdom does Jewish teaching offer as alternatives to these restless and futile endeavors?
